    Read the full breakdown

What a detail is, and what it isn't.

Detail is the most abused word in this industry. Here's exactly what's in ours.

    ● DEFINITIONS

Why the word detail means nothing

There's no standard definition of a detail. No governing body, no minimum scope. Every shop gets to point the word at whatever they're selling, which is how a 45-minute wash ends up marketed with the same word as a two-day restoration.

That's why we publish our step list instead of asking you to trust the word. Here's how we use the two terms.

    • Maintenance wash. A genuinely paint-safe wash. Two buckets with grit guards, foam pre-soak, clean microfiber, forced-air drying, plus interior vacuum, glass, and tires. What it is not: it doesn't pull off bonded contamination, doesn't fix swirls, and doesn't restore protection. It's the rhythm that keeps everything else working.
    • Full detail. A deep clean of everything. Chemical decontamination and clay on the outside, steam and extraction with conditioning by surface type on the inside, plus jambs, wheel barrels, and glass in and out. Our Showroom tier adds a one-step polish for gloss. What it is not: paint correction.

A one-step gloss pass is enhancement. Multi-stage defect removal is correction. Shops that blur that line are selling the word instead of the work.

    ● THE REAL DAMAGE

Where car paint damage actually comes from

People assume their swirls came from something dramatic. Almost always it was the washing.

    • Tunnel washes are a sandpaper subscription. The brushes carry grit from every car ahead of you and drag it across your paint. Most of the damage we correct got installed a few dollars at a time.
    • Touchless washes trade brushes for chemistry. The strongly alkaline cleaners that let them work without contact strip wax and break down coatings a little more each visit. A coated car that "lost its coating" in 18 months usually has a touchless habit.
    • One bucket drags grit panel to panel. Two buckets isn't enthusiast fussiness. It's the minimum that separates washing from slow-motion sanding.
    • Water spots etch on a timer. Hard water drying on a sun-hot panel can etch into the clear coat within hours. At that point it stopped being a wash problem and became a correction problem. Wash in the shade and dry it right away.
    ● HOW TO CHECK

The spots that tell you how the job went

You can't judge a detail by the hood. Every shop cleans the hood. Judge it by the places nobody looks, because those are the places a rushed job skips.

    • The fuel door. Flip it open. This is the single fastest tell there is.
    • Door jambs and the sills under them. You see them every time you get in, and rushed jobs skip them every time.
    • Behind the side mirrors and in the badge recesses. Fiddly, slow, and easy to leave.
    • Wheel barrels. The inside face of the wheel, not just the part pointing at the street.
    • Vent fins, seat seams, and under the seats. The interior version of the same test.

Run that check on us too. We'd rather you knew what to look at.

    ● HONEST LIMITS

    What a detail can't do

A detail makes everything clean. It doesn't make damage disappear and it doesn't add lasting protection. Those are different jobs with different price tags, and knowing the difference keeps you from buying the wrong one.

Here's the honest map. A wash maintains. A detail resets. Correction repairs. PeelClear, film, and ceramic coatings protect. Each layer has one job, and the hype starts when a shop sells one layer as doing another layer's work.

Tell us what's actually bothering you about the car and we'll tell you which one you need. Sometimes that's the cheaper one, and we'll say so.

    Frequently asked questions.

What's the difference between a wash, a detail, and paint correction?

They fix different problems, and mixing them up is how people overpay. A maintenance wash keeps a clean car clean. A full detail resets the whole car, inside and out, including the contamination a wash can't reach. Paint correction is machine work that removes swirls and scratches from the clear coat itself. A wash maintains, a detail resets, correction repairs, and a coating protects. Tell us what's bothering you and we'll tell you which one you need, including when it's the cheaper one.

Will a detail get the swirls out of my paint?

No, and that's the line most shops blur. A detail can include a light polish that boosts gloss, and that's real, but removing swirls and scratches takes multi-stage machine correction. Anyone selling you swirl removal at detail prices is selling you either a one-step gloss pass or a filler product that hides the damage until about the third wash.

How do I compare your detail to a cheaper one?

Ask both shops for the step list. There's no legal definition of the word detail, so every shop uses it for whatever they're selling, which is how a 45-minute wash gets the same name as a two-day reset. We publish exactly what's in ours, step by step, so you're comparing actual work instead of comparing words.

Are automatic car washes really that bad?

The brush kind, yes. Those spinning brushes drag the grit from the last hundred cars across your paint. Most of the swirl damage we get hired to correct was installed a few dollars at a time. Touchless isn't harmless either: no brushes, but the strong chemicals that let it clean without touching the car strip wax and break down ceramic coatings wash after wash.

How do I know if a shop rushed my detail?

Check the places they can't see you checking. Flip open your fuel door. Look at the door jambs, behind the side mirrors, the badge recesses, the wheel barrels, the vent fins, the seat seams. Rushed jobs clean the panels you look at and skip the ones you don't. If the fuel door is grimy, you know how the rest of the job went.

Can you get pet hair out of the seats?

Yes, it's one of the most common things we're asked for. Specialized brushes plus hot-water extraction pull out almost all of it. Pet hair removal is a flat-rate add-on you can put on any detail package. Truly extreme cases get an honest heads-up before we start, because we'd rather price the time than rush it.

    Do you handle smoke odor?

Yes. Ozone treatment neutralizes nicotine and smoke where it actually lives instead of covering it with a scent. Ozone odor treatment is a flat-rate add-on you can put on any detail package.

How long do the results last?

The inside stays nice as long as your habits allow. On the outside, the spray sealant from a Refresh runs a couple of months, and the sealant in a Full Detail is rated for about 6 months. If you want the clean-and-protected feeling to last years instead of months, that's a ceramic coating, and we'll tell you honestly whether your paint should be corrected first.

How often should I get one?

Most people do a full detail once or twice a year and keep a maintenance wash rhythm in between. The detail resets the car. The wash rhythm is what keeps it from needing another reset. Our Maintenance Packs cover that rhythm: prepaid exterior washes in packs of 4, 6, or 8 at 20 to 25% off, used on your schedule.
